A demonstration in defence of the Guarantee of Income

Apr 03, 2017
Thousands of people took to the streets on the 1st of April to claim the system of Guarantee of Income and against the criminalisation of those receiving it, at a demonstration called by the signatories of the Charter of Social Rights of the Basque Country.

Convened by the Charter of Social Rights of the Basque Country, thousands of people took to the streets in Bilbao on the 1st of April in defence of social rights. The protesters strongly condemned the cutbacks that in recent months the Basque Government has been making to welfare benefits.

Amongst these cutbacks the most serious involves what has occurred to the Guarantee of Income. After the important cutback made in 2008 (7%), now the Basque Government has decided to not apply its own law. In this way, this benefit that should have had a rise of 8% in 2017, exactly the same rise as the Minimum Inter-professional Salary, instead has risen by 1.5%. The writing behind the main banner clearly explained the objective of the convening bodies: #RGIdefendatu
