ELA condemns the State’s repressive escalation against Catalonia

Sep 25, 2017
ELA condemns the Government’s political decision to arrest the senior officials of the Catalan Government and to search premises belonging to the Generalitat, as well as other organisms and companies. This repressive escalation forms an illegal attack against the Catalan institutions and against Catalonia as a whole. As a result of this morning’s repressive episodes, the meetings that our secretary general Txiki Muñoz was going to hold with the President of the Generalitat de Cataluña, Carles Puigdemont and with the vice-president, Oriol Junqueras have been suspended.

ELA considers that a de facto state of emergency has been declared in the Spanish State that is being substantiated in very serious attacks on fundamental and political rights. We are referring to the illegitimate interference in the activity by the government, the Catalan Parliament and different public organisms, as well as the attack against the fundamental rights of the citizens and of civil society, such as freedom of opinion, freedom of assembly or freedom to demonstrate. It seems likely that the state of emergency has now turned into the natural state of things in Spain, an added reason for more and more people and nations to continue aspiring to their right to self-determination sooner rather than later.

ELA understands that, within this context, the Partido Nacionalista Vasco must immediately and definitively stop upholding the majority that grants stability to the Partido Popular’s Government. This support to the party that is leading the repression in Catalonia and that heads the ranking for political corruption and the legal proceedings that are derived from these, is not only a reason for shame for the Basque people, but, what is worse, it certifies as democratic, a political force that gives examples on a daily basis that it has not separated itself from the inheritance of Spain’s dictator.

ELA would like to inform its militancy that, as a result of this morning’s repressive episodes, the meetings that our secretary general Txiki Muñoz was going to hold with the President of the Generalitat de Cataluña, Carles Puigdemont and with the vice-president, Oriol Junqueras have been suspended.

ELA commends the public spirit with which the Catalan people are leading the response to these repressive episodes and it encourages everyone to continue with the actions until they manage to reach their full sovereignty using democratic means. ELA also encourages its members to continue taking action in the defence of Catalonia in the many demonstrations and concentrations that are being convened over the next few days.
