Euskal Herria’s Charter of Social Rights is calling for mobilisations against the process of impoverishment: demonstrations on the 19th of November

Oct 18, 2022
The agents and trade unions that constitute Euskal Herria’s Charter of Social Rights have appeared in Donostia on the International Day against Poverty and they have announced mobilisations under the slogan “Pobretzeari STOP! Decent living conditions and price control now!” The mobilising dynamic will reach its peak at the demonstrations held on the 19th of November in the four capital cities of Hego Euskal Herria. At 12 midday they will start out from Artium in Gasteiz, and at 5.30 pm they will be in Iruñea (from the Baluarte), Donostia (from the Boulevard) and Bilbao (from the Sagrado Corazón). These mobilisations intend to be, alongside other movements, expressions of convergence with many different fights.

In their appearance, they denounced that the current situation is unsustainable and that with the increase in inflation the structural problems that we are already suffering from are being speeded up. Therefore, they have made a call to face up to the cutbacks in the public services and the increase in the impoverishment of the working class in general.

There are six main points included in the table of demands. A minimum salary of 1,400 euros and a minimum pension of 1,260 euros to dignify the workers’ employment, both subject to the real CPI. They demand the right to energy and the nationalisation of the sector along with control over all the energy products, and a road map to democratically plan the transition. The defence of public services, a tax reform for the equal distribution of wealth and different proposals to ensure the rights and basic needs, such as food, housing, and the regularisation of all people or public transport are also added to the table of demands. Peace and the need for sovereignty make up the last point.

Prior to this date, this Thursday they will be giving out pamphlets defending public services and on the 26th of October there will be a conference on energy in Gasteiz. On the 27th of October, Bilbao and Iruñea will host a transparent market with local produce that includes the demand for food sovereignty. On the 3rd of November in Donostia, an initiative in favour of the right to housing and against touristification will be carried out. The so-called ‘tour’ of demonstrations will come to a head on the 10th of November with demonstrations in Bilbao and Iruñea in favour of fair incomes.
