Social and trade union mobilization has succeeded in stopping Sidenor's shipments to Israel

Jul 02, 2025
Despite the company’s decision, BDS continues to mobilise today in Bilbao to demand information on the steel load to be sent to Israel.

A few days ago the media filtered that Sidenor, the Basque steel giant, has been sending steel to Israel from 2024, more specifically to the arms manufacturer IMI Systems, an army supplying company.

ELA, along with other unions, asked the company to verify this information, something it didn't do, and demanded that, if verified, shipments be stopped. Thanks to the social pressure exerted by BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) and trade unions, Sidenor has decided to reverse his plans. ELA sees it as a victory attributable to the Basque working class.

However, ELA regrets that the Basque Government and other institutions do not act with the same forcefulness in boycotting cooperation with companies that encourage genocide. "They put business before respect for human rights", he denounces, and believes that it is essential not to normalize relations with the Israeli government or companies.

BDS has called for today a mobilization in Bilbo, at 19:30 to denounce Sidenor's action. The mobilisation is maintained in order to require the company to provide all the information on the load and location of the 40 steel lots to be shipped to Israel today. ELA encourages its militants to participate.
